Te Hapara is a contributing primary school meaning we have year 1 to 6 students. A wide range of ethnicities are represented within the Te Hapara whanau, including Maori, NZ European, Pasifika, Asian, Middle Eastern, Indian, Cambodian, South African and Portuguese. The staff focus on ensuring learning excellence and developing socially well adjusted learners who strive for excellence. Whaia te iti kahurangi.

Our primary focus is on harnessing our combined cultural capital to become confident, connected, actively involved life long learners. We do this through our strategic focus on empowering and engaging our learners, our staff and our partnerships.

Our focus across the school is 'Learning through Discovery'. We have two teams: Manuiti - Years 0-3 and Manu Kahu - Years 4-6.

The 'School' was established at Gisborne West in 1911 and was one of the four original schools in Gisborne. It was recognised as 'Te Hapara' from 1912 onwards. Rongowhakaata Halbert supplied the idiomatic translation as "Early Dawn" or "First Light"
